Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Intentional self-care and growth during times of relative calm can be incredibly valuable. One benefit of working with a private pay therapist is that you’re not limited by insurance restrictions that require a diagnosable mental health condition. Therapy can be a meaningful investment in living a more intentional, balanced, and fulfilling life.
My office is on the second floor of the historic Nutting Block building at 220 Division Street South in downtown Northfield, MN. Go up the elevator and take a left into the common waiting room. I will greet you there at the beginning of your session.
Yes, telehealth is an option if you are within the state of Minnesota. However, I strongly recommend that our initial session be in-person. This helps us to develop a rich connection before future telehealth sessions.
Every situation is different, but the most common is a 55 or 75-minute session on a weekly basis. The length of therapy can vary from a few sessions to many months depending upon your circumstances.
Yes. You will always have agency over what you share and when you share it.
Yes, the law requires me to keep our sessions confidential with a few legal exceptions. These exceptions include any suspected abuse or neglect of a minor or vulnerable adult, any clear and immediate danger of suicide or severe self-harm, any evidence of imminent danger to others, or any order by a court of law to release records or testify in a legal proceeding. Also, if you are seeking insurance reimbursement, your insurance company will require certain information, including a diagnosis.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. This title can be a bit confusing as this does NOT mean that I don’t see individuals. It simply means that the overall lens of my training is systemic: I recognize that your story and challenges occur within the broader context of your environment.
I do not, for several reasons: I can provide a more personalized therapy experience for you without insurance restrictions, our work together remains private and does not require a permanent diagnosis on your medical record, and I’m able to devote my full attention to what I do best and love: working with you.
Yes. Payment is due at the time of service but you can contact your insurance company to ask about out-of-network benefits. I can provide a monthly superbill for you to submit. Please note that if you choose this option, your insurance company will require a diagnosis.
No. This is another benefit of working with a private pay therapist. However, if you receive reimbursement through your insurance company, a diagnosis will become part of your permanent medical record.

It takes energy to begin working with a new therapist, and feeling comfortable is essential. During our initial phone call, we can determine if we would work well together based on your goals, my approach, and my experience. During therapy, I check in regularly to seek your honest input about our relationship and work together. Continuing therapy with me is always your choice. If we are not a good fit (exceedingly rare), I can provide referrals to help connect you with another therapist.
You can call me at 507-412-8032 or fill out the contact form for a complimentary 15-minute phone call. If I think we would be a good fit and you decide to begin working with me, you can schedule an initial session. Before this first session, I will email you a link to your client portal where you can fill out the intake materials. In our initial session, we will begin exploring your story and identifying what you would like to focus on in therapy.
